I must first say I have really enjoyed this thread. A wealth of information.
Here is what I understand about direct and indirect injection. In the Direct injection engines, the injectors spray fuel directly into the cylinder and onto the piston. Indrirect injection engines spray the fuel into a small chamber next to the cylinder. I dont fully understand the physics behind this but I do know the results. Direct injection engines are easier to start in cold weather and are more powerful per cubic inch. Indirect injection engines are much quieter. There have been several posts on here stating that Kubota engines are quieter than the Yanmars in the JD tractors. One big reason is that the Kubota is Indirect(at least the last time I looked) and the yanmar is direct. I think the Yanmar is easier to start in cold weather. It's also interesting to note that if you are around them much you will also notice that indirect diesel exhaust smells much different than direct. If anyone has any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

Here is the deal on the 3rd scv(not 4th or 5th). The 4200-4700 tractors come with the 3rd valve built into the dual scv body. The kit you buy comes with handle/cable assembly and plubming to operate the valve and get the oil to the rear of the tractor. That is why the first remote outlet(3rd scv) is fairly cheap compared to other manufacturers. Likewise the addition of a 4th or 5th remote will cost substatially more because you must buy the entire valve in addition to the handle/cable and plumbing.

A good muffler will keep you from hearing the turbo whine even when it is working. There should be a port on the intake manifold(ie. 1/8 npt) to connect a low pressure gauge. Most turbos run 12-18 psi at high idle. Get a service manual and it should explain the procedure.

Here is what I understand. The calcium solution should not corrode the rims as long as the rims are completely covered by the solution. Oxidation cannot occur without air. The reason tubes are more of a detriment than a help is that if a small leak occurs in the tube or valve, then it gets between the rim and tube and rots the rim.
I dont profess to be a chemist, but I would not be afraid to try it.

My JD 4200 (along with other 4000 series owners on this board) also had a dash fogging problem. The dealer replaced the entire dash under warrenty and the problem never occured again. You may want to request the same from NH.

When I was farming we never kept water jugs on the tractor for a couple reasons. First, the tractor puts off alot of heat and the water will warm up very quickly. Second, when you ride for hours(8-10) it is a good excuse to stop, get off the machine and stretch your legs while you get a drink. On the other hand cup holders are kinda neat.

My Dad has a 98 model 870. It is a great tractor. We used it to dig the foundation for my garage(3feet deep).
I have a 4200. It has some improvements over the 870 but I like both machines.

I dont have any experience with either but... check where the wheels/rollers are. If the four wheeled version doesn't have any rollers in the middle of the deck then it is going to scalp.

This is one topic I actually speak on with experience. You can control a tractor much better with front end pointed up the hill. Also, if you have directional tires(R1,R4)) your traction is greatly decreased when backing up a hill or trying to hold back driving down hill if the nose is pointed down. Also, if you are going down a hill and the rear tires start to slide, take it out of gear and hold back with brakes. Otherwise the tires will begin to counterrotate and the back end will start to come around the front. But, as stated before, the most important thing is to not traverse a hill sideways if you are at all uncomofortable. And if equipped with a loader, keep it close the ground. I would have to suspect that most compact tractors that are flipped can be blamed on a loader with the bucket to high while transporting a load.

The comment about catching your boot on the platform and braking it is unfounded. The platform is made from at least 3/16 formed plate steel where you mount the tractor.

I just changed the oil in my 4200. I can get you the JD number but I dont think it is worth it to cross reference it. I only paid $5.00 at the JD dealer for the filter. I have paid that much for a Wix filter at an Auto store.

In response to the dual hyd pumps, David Brown and later Case had optional dual hyd(tandom) pumps. One was piped to the 3pt hitch and the other to the remote outlets. It was a handy feature.

I bought R4 for my tractor because I use it to mow and for loader work. If I knew I would not be using it on turf I would definately go with ag tires. They get better traction and have deeper lugs. But they will really chew up the turf, even if you are not spinning.

I farmed for many years. I would not have a tractor without brakes to steer. Many times a heavy load on the back requires brakes to steer effectively. I also doubt that it wears the brakes out since anyone who has used brakes to steer knows that you barely have to touch the brakes to cause the front to move when there is a load on the back. This is obviously a battle of preference over JD and Kubota.

I have some experience with diesel engines. Adding additional mufflers or any restriction to the exhaust will cause additional back pressure. This in turn will cause more heat build up in the engine compartment. Watching the temp guage will give some indication of a potential problem but may not tell the whole story. Personally, I would not recommend adding the extra muffler. I would consult a dealer and take his advice.
